The Department of Visual Art hosts dozens of student-centered events and gallery exhibitions each semester. We also host 3-4 Visiting Artist each semester to give lectures open to the public.

Student Events

The Department of Visual Art takes students to New York City each semester. Some instructors require their classes to visit a major museum or exhibit related to their teaching, while other faculty will tour galleries in Chelsea or the Lower East Side with their students to see the work of contemporary artists. Bus trips have also been made to MASS MoCA in North Adams, MA, the Clark Museum in Williamstown, MA, and Dia in Beacon, NY.

The Department hosts several social events for VA concentrators and currently enrolled students during the academic year as a means for students to meet one another outside of the classroom and are important community-building opportunities.

At the end of the spring semesters, VA DUGs coordinate an Open Studios event that provides an opportunity for students to showcase their work to their peers at Brown and the broader Providence community.
