Visual Art

Visual Art at Brown University

The Department of Visual Art focuses on a range of skills and concepts covering both traditional and new media. The department offers studio courses in areas that include book arts, digital imaging, film, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, sound, and video.

Our faculty provides practical experience with an emphasis on creativity grounded in both a historical and theoretical basis. Images and objects are created, interpreted, and evaluated with critical rigor and aesthetic sensitivity. Our curriculum is challenging and intensive for concentrators and offers stimulating electives for students in all concentrations.

Our Visiting Artist Program brings nationally and internationally acclaimed artists to campus. This program allows students to have direct interactions with a wide variety of artists through lectures, workshops, critiques, and the occasional Artist Residency. We also invite Visual Art alumni to return to the department to share their professional experiences in the art world during the Annual Alumni Panel in the spring semester each year.
